Not only does DNS filtering help protect users from accessing dangerous or unwanted domains, but it can significantly reduce the amount of unwanted traffic on your network. This script may create a conflict that breaks Java on a FreeBSD upgrade.DNS filtering is an important part of a well planned firewall. It's been lightly tested to work on v2.5.x and v2.6.x of pfSense. In a case like that, if you can connect the behavior of the NxFilter software with the actions taken by the script, please open an issue, or, better yet, fork and fix and submit a pull request. I've updated my script to install NxFilter on pfSense and similar FreeBSD based systems like OPNsense. It may turn out that some issue with the NxFilter software is caused by something this script is doing. The answers to most questions about setting up or troubleshooting NxFilter are found most quickly on the NxFilter forums. Dnsmasq accepts DNS queries and either answers them from a small, local cache or forwards them to a real, recursive DNS server. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the global DNS. You should troubleshoot these issues as you would on any other installation of NxFilter. Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder, designed to provide DNS (and optionally DHCP and TFTP) services to a small-scale network. Rob's script will take care of the rest of the things. Set some firewall rules on pfSense for NxFilter. Change the port of the webserver of pfSense. No other changes have been made to pfsense. ssh has been turned on and the setup wizard has been run. Grep -i error /usr/local/nxfilter/log/nxfilter.log You should then check the nxfilter.log file in the /usr/local/nxfilter/log/ directory for errors. Installing NxFilter on pfSense or Netgate box became very simple with Rob's script. In case it helps, pfsense was installed from 2.5.0 dvd and updated from the console. The first step with any issue should be to stop and start the NxFilter service. ![]()
